What is Psychology?  

  • Classics in the History of Psychology: Primary Source Material: This site provides descriptions of some of the most significant philosophical works in the history of psychology, along with suggestions about passages which might be included in students' reading assignments. Many of them are available on-line.
  • William James: Eugene Taylor of the Harvard Medical School presents a short biography of William James.
  • B.F. Skinner Foundation: Pictures and movie clips, a computer-based training tutorial, and information about Skinner's publications.  
  • Careers in Psychology: from the "Students" section of the American Psychological Association's web site.
  • Today in the History of Psychology: Warren Street at Central Washington University created this site you you can see which of over 3000 famous events in Psychology happened on any date.

Research Methods

Biological Psychology

  • General Brain Imaging Resources:  Looksmart's guide to finding brain imaging resources on the web.
  • The Whole Brain Atlas: Here, you can view the differences between normal brains vs. those afflicted by a variety of diseases.
  • The Visible Human Project:  A murderer who donated his body to science was frozen, sliced into thousands of sections, and then each slice was digitized.  The result is the you can use your mouse to navigate anywhere in the human body! 
  • AMA Archives Journals: These archived journals cover a wide range of areas including neurology and general psychiatry.
  • National Institute on Drug Abuse: This site has a great deal of information both on drugs of abuse and on drugs used to fight drug abuse. 
  • National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information: This service of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration contains databases and information on the latest drug abuse research.
  • Human Genome Project: Scientists are close to mapping the entire human genetic code!  Find out the latest progress on this huge research effort at this site. 
  • McConnell Brain Imaging Center: Ten teams of researchers who utilized PET and MRI scanners have collaborated to bring you this web site full of brain images.
  • Split Brain: Pail Pietch at Indiana University explains Gazzaniga's research on split brain patients in more depth.
  • Basic Neural Processes Tutorial: This site includes an animated tutorial on how neurons communicate as well as quizzes over neurons and brain functions.
  • Neurosciences on the Internet: Neuroguide.com provides "a searchable and browsable index of neuroscience resources available on the Internet: Neurobiology, neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, psychology, cognitive science sites and information on human neurological diseases".
  • Neuropsychology Central: Besides the cool opening page, this site answers Frequently-Asked-Questions, allows you to communicate via a bulletin board, and has plenty of neuroscience links.
  • The Human Corpus Callosum: Another part of Paul Pietch's web site contains a great deal of information about the corpus collosum.
  • Clickable Map of the Brain Surface: A good site for testing your knowledge of brain lobes, gyri, and sulci.

Sensation and Perception

  • Illusionworks: This award-winning web site allows you to view hundreds of optical illusions, both static and active.
  • Counter-Rotating Spirals Illusion:  Ouch! This one is fun, but hurts my eyes.  Produces a very vivid effect.
  • Perception of Facial Aging Laboratory: A good place to learn more about prototyping, facial averaging and symmetry in the perception of attractiveness.  Another good place on the same subject is Faceprints, where you can take part in one of several ongoing scientific studies on beauty, aging, and attractiveness.
  • Vision Research WWW Servers: An A to Z listing of people and places conducting research on vision.
  • The Joy of Visual Perception:  A Web Book: As the name suggests, an entire book on visual perception, adapted for the web.
  • Retina Reference: The structures of the eye, diagrams to help aid memory of retinal anatomy, psychophysics and a set of descriptions and examples of synapses can be found in this site.

Learning

Cognitive Psychology

  • Museum of Perception and Cognition:  in addition to some visual illusions, this site has some demos of cognition experiments including Sperling's and Gardner's experiments and the Stroop Effect.
  • Tower of Hanoi Game: This is the best version I've found of a classic game used to study problem solving.  
  • Mnemonics:  A section of resources from the Mind Tools Bookstore outlines a number of mnemonic techniques. A shorter introduction to mnemonics can be found at Memory Techniques and Mnemonics, part of a free course called "Learning to Learn" created by the University of Toronto.
  • Semantic Net Simulation:  This one's kind of crazy.  It simulates a semantic net, and you can interact with it using your mouse.
  • The Memory Web Site: This "all about memory" web site includes sheep's brains, articles & lectures, and online games.
  • Cognitive Science Resources on the Internet:  This site is on it's last legs (it hasn't been updated for quite a while) but it's still useful.   Check it out while you still can.

Intelligence & Personality

  • IQ Test: A fast, free test that establishes your IQ level.
  • Test Junkie: A collection of free online psychological tests.  Some are great, some are good, some are jokes, and some are terrible.  Try some.
  • Emotional IQ Test: An online test developed by Daniel Goleman, a Harvard pscyhology PhD and author. This test measures your emotional intelligence--your ability to empathize and deal with other people as well as yourself.
  • Kiersey Temperament Sorter:  This is the online, free version of the Myers-Briggs personality inventory.  Another related test is the Personality Type Test.

Abnormal Psychology

  • Psychiatry Information for the General Public: Online diagnostic tests, information on disorders and treatment, and lists of self-help groups.
  • Depression FAQ: Answers to frequently-asked-questions about depression.
  • Goldberg Depression Scale: An online test to measure and track moods and the possibility of depression.
  • Schizophrenia: Internet Mental Health's information resource page for schizophrenia.
  • Phobia list: an exhaustive list of hundreds of phobias.
  • DSM criteria: From the American Psychiatric Press, a price list of the DSM-IV and the publications related to it.
  • Internet Mental Health: Information on 54 common mental disorders, treatments, and online diagnostic tests.
  • The Anxiety-Panic Internet Resource Page: led by their mascot, the Tapir (a little-known large mammal) you can access lots of information about anxiety disorders.
  • Autism Resources: Links, a FAQ, advice for parents of autistic children, and more.
  • Bipolar Disorder: Information, links, homepages of persons with bipolar disorder, even bipolar humor.
  • Psychopharmacology tips: Tips from members of the "Interpsych" discussion list.
  • Internet Mental Health Medications: An extensive list of psychiatric medications is included, and for each medication its indications, contraindications, precautions, dosage, research and more are discussed.
  • The Effectiveness of Psychotherapy: this study from Consumer Reports includes their detailed survey and methodology as well as references. You'll have to read it for yourself to find out their conclusions!

  • Correlations:  this Java Applet is slow to load, but provides a great way to test your understanding of correlations.
  • Power:  how many research subjects do you have to have before your results are reliable?  This site helps you find out.

General Psychology Resources

  • American Psychological Association: Homepage for the APA, one of the two biggest associations in the world for psychologists (the other is APS, below).  Oriented more toward clinical psychology.
  • American Psychological Society:  Here's the other main psychology organization.  Oriented more toward experimental psychology.
  • Resources in Psychology on the Internet: up to 2000 visitors a week use this site to find sites related to psychology.
  • PsychCrawler:  this is a search engine just for psychology!
  • Scholar.com's Psychology Section:  sponsored by Blackboard, the folks who make the "CourseInfo" web courseware.
  • WebCT's Psychology Section:  sponsored by WebCT, the folks who make the "WebCT" web courseware.
  • Psychology Departments: A list of universities whose psychology departments are on the World Wide Web.
  • PsychWeb: lots of psychology-related information for both students and teachers of psychology.
  • Psychology Glossary: This glossary is written in accessible language and gives examples from real life to demonstrate the concepts.
  • Quia!: This site contains games for testing your knowledge of personality disorders and psychology and psychologists. In spite of the amusing formats offered (concentration, hangman, word search puzzles, pop up vocabulary, flashcards and more) the information is college level. You can also make up your own games and add them to the site.
  • APA Style Guide: learn more about writing in APA Style.
