Textbooks for Learning

Chambliss, Marilyn J., & Calfee, Robert C. (1998). Textbooks for learning: Nurturing children's minds.  Malden, MA: Blackwell.

Note: This will probably be the briefest summary ever!  I won't abstract the entire book, only the main idea of the next-to-last chapter on Instructional Support Systems.

PART III STEPPING INTO THE FUTURE

Chapter 8: A new approach to textbook design: instructional support systems.

An instructional support system (IIS) goes beyond a textbook.  It can include:

  • Workbooks
  • Worksheets
  • Student Reader
  • Audiotapes
  • Computer software
  • Material for adapting to special populations
  • Assessments
  • Teacher's manual
  • Management Checklists

Note: I think this chapter makes an important point---that is, you don't teach using a textbook, you teach using an instructional system of which the textbook is just one part!  That's why I never evaluate just a textbook; if a publisher wants me to consider using his/her products, I need to evaluate the entire instruction system, including transparencies, test banks, videos, software, web sites, etc.
