Seventy College Teaching Procedures

Goode, Delmer M. (1964).  Seventy College Teaching Procedures.  Corvallis, OR:  Graduate School, Oregon State College.

SAMPLE PROCEDURES:

Ability Grouping: temporarily group students of like ability together for a group exercise.

Blackboard Recitation:  section off blackboard, ask question, and several students called to the board simultaneously write answers.

Exhibitions of results from student activities:  take the best student contributions from class activities, remove names, construct displays, and post.

Forum:  presentations by several participants in succession, followed by group discussion.

Interview students at the beginning of the semester.  Use information gleaned throughout the semester.

Mock Court: assign or elect defendants, prosecuting attorneys, defense lawyers, jury, court stenographer, reporters, sketch artists, etc.  Hold mock trial.

Parable Construction: present parable (e.g., one of Aesop’s fables), then have students turn class topic into a parable.

Student Participation in conduct of course: let students help pick topics, sequence topics, present topics to class, and make out test questions.

Establish a new Tradition: present a once-famous tradition,  express interest in reviving it, let students amend and implement it (Bob: a la “The Dead Poet’s Society”).

Video or Audio Tape Interviews: the instructor tapes experts, colleagues, community members, or former students (why should all the videos you show in class be professional ones?).
